Customized On-Site Technical Writing Workshops for Busy Professionals
Most scientists and engineers receive little or no training in technical writing, despite its importance to many jobs. Plateau TechComm offers customized, on-site workshops that address the challenges of environmental and scientific consultants, agency staff, and others who write reports and proposals regularly. These workshops teach participants an analytical, nuts-and-bolts approach to solving problems that professionals commonly face. Using real-life examples, participants examine writing principles at three levels: report (organizational), paragraph, and sentence. The curriculum is tailored to your group’s needs. Topics may include:
• Language-processing concepts
• Audience definition, organizational strategies, report formats
• Overviews and segues, headings, topic sentences, the “old-new” rule, the “seven plus or minus two” rule
• Basic grammar, sentence structures, active and passive voice, pronouns and antecedents, nominalizations, dangling phrases and modifiers
Nancy also teaches workshops on web-design and various software applications through the Computer Training Center at Northern Arizona University.
